What does the Bible say about anger?

Answers from the Bible, in your language.

Anger, in itself, is not necessarily a sin, but the Bible gives us careful warning about how we handle it. Ephesians 4:26-27 tells us, "Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil." This means that even when anger arises, we should not let it lead us into sin or let it linger, as it can create a foothold for the devil in our lives.

Jesus teaches about the heart behind anger in Matthew 5:22, explaining that harboring anger can lead to judgment just like physical acts of violence. The heart issue is crucial because Jesus looks at our hearts and our motives.

We are encouraged to turn away from wrath and anger. James 1:19-20 counsels us to be "quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger, for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God." Therefore, as followers of Christ, we should aim to be patient and gentle, trusting God to help us overcome feelings of anger.

Ultimately, the power to control anger and respond lovingly comes from the Holy Spirit. Let us ask God to fill us with His peace, so we can love others well and reflect Christ’s character in our relationships.
